Liberia: Making Malnutrition a Health Issue

Monrovia — With 45 percent of Liberians chronically or acutely malnourished, experts say nutrition is a burning health problem, but NGOs feel the Ministry of Health is not as worried as it should be, and lacks the capacity to provide leadership in bringing about solutions. Action Contre la Faim (ACF), an NGO supporting therapeutic feeding centres for malnourished children in the capital, Monrovia, said 45 percent of children who died before reaching the age of five were underweightChronic… Continue

Weah unhappy with Liberia coach

Former Liberia captain George Weah has called for the Lone Star's German coach Antoine Hey to resign or be sacked. Weah is unhappy that Hey failed to lead Liberia to the final stage of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations. Hey himself seemed on the point of quitting in June but was persuaded to stay as coach despite failure in the 2010 qualifying campaign. "A coach that goes into a competition and doesn't qualify should be sacked or he resigns," Weah told BBC Sport. "Then… Continue

An open letter to President Ellen Johnson- Sirleaf

By Colonel Edwin M. Stone US Army The Center for National Documents and Records Agency, for short CNDRA is in the spotlight at major Universities, colleges, other areas that are infested with Liberians, the Liberian communities and more surprisingly in Iraq, where Liberian-American soldiers are fighting the Iraq war. Recently, I spoke to Liberians that have just returned from Liberia, a country that is at the verge of recovery about the current situation and status of Liberia. Most of them went… Continue

Sirleaf 'sorry' she backed Taylor,Thursday, 12 February 2009

Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has apologised at a truth and reconciliation commission over her backing for ex-rebel Charles Taylor.

She said she had initially supported the rebel chief's war effort and even raised funds for him, but denied ever having been a member of his group.

She said she had been fooled about the real intentions of Mr Taylor.

He led rebels who toppled President Samuel Doe in a 14-year civil war that

Liberia news, Wednesday Feb 11 2009

Liberian refugees continue to be punished with threats of deportation from Ghana and the United States, while those who created the havoc that led to their fleeing are in Liberia living confortably masaquerading as government officials. Many of these hardcore criminals have taken santuary in the Liberian Legislature under the guise of being law makers.

I firmly believed the Obama Administration will extend the DED status for US-based Liberians for now until a new policy is put in… Continue

Monrovia, Liberia -- President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Wednesday dedicated a branch of the Liberia Bank for Development and Investment (LBDI), extending appreciation to the LBDI family for the long years of service to the nation, even during the most difficult periods of Liberia’s history. “As we dedicate these new premises, we call upon the Bank to renew its commitment to support the development of Liberian enterprises and entrepreneurship, in the spirit of its original mission,” the Liberian leader and a former LBDI President, said as she cut the ribbon to open the new structure

Formal Opening of the 5th Session of the 52nd National Legislature
President Ellen Johnson on Monday participated in a program marking the formal opening of the 5th session of the 52nd National Legislature.

The President praised the commitment of the Liberian people in consolidating peace and lauded the international community for Liberia’s progress over the years. She expressed hope that more would be done to accelerate progress by creating more opportunities for Liberians, especially jobs to improve living conditions.

The Liberian leader also praised the country’s bilateral partners for supporting Liberia’s debt relief program. “It is because of your support that we are about to reach the completion point,” the President is quoted as saying in an Executive Mansion release.

Addressing Liberia’s commitment to regional cooperation, President Johnson Sirleaf acknowledged that the sub-region is still vulnerable and efforts are continuing to consolidate peace and security with the support of the international community.

The doyen of the Diplomatic Corps, Lebanese Ambassador Mansour Abdallah, welcomed Liberia’s progress in the areas of reconstruction, peace and reconciliation and the promotion of democratic principles. Ambassador Mansour noted that hope has been restored, yet expressed his sobering appeal that “Everything cannot be done in one day.”

Early Saturday morning, women groups, particularly market women, gathered at the residence of the Liberian leader to extend congratulations on the fourth anniversary of her inauguration as President of Liberia. The women presented several gift items, including market produce to the President and praised her sound leadership. They prayed that God would continue to grant the President good health as she leads the nation.
The Liberian leader thanked the women for their support and admonished them to continue to work harder for the upliftment of the country.

Hartford Lone Star

Hartford, September 5, 2009
Liberian soccer giants CAF from central Connecticut defeated Hartford Lone Star 5 goals to 2 in a friendly soccer match. The return match is scheduled to be played in New Haven soon. CAF lost to Hartford Lone Star during the July 26 soccer tournament and redeemed their pride with a victory that was outstanding.
Hartford boys are determined to defeat CAF in their own home. CAF on the other hand is calling on all of its stars for the final encounter.

The flag of Liberia consists of six red and five white alternating horizontal stripes that run down the flag. In the top left hand corner of the Liberian flag there is a blue square which has a white five-pointed star in the center of it.

Liberian Flag Meaning:
The 11 stripes symbolize the 11 signatories of the Liberian declaration of independence. The red and white colors symbolize courage and moral excellence. The white star represents the freedom the ex-slaves were given and the blue square represents the African mainland.

Liberian Flag History:
The Liberian flag was adopted on July 26, 1847 after gaining independence. Liberia was settled by freed American slaves in the early 1800s, naming their country for liberty itself. The country was originally recognized as a colony of the USA. For this reason, the Liberian flag is very similar to the flag of the United States of America.

Interesting Liberian Flag Facts:
The Liberian flag is seen on many ships around the world, as Liberia offers registration under its flag. Shipping companies do this to avoid taxes and restrictions that other countries enforce. It is estimated that about 1600 ships fly the Liberian flag as a flag of convenience. This brings in much of the country's revenue
